Spain wins fifth Women's U19 EURO title with final victory over Germany

Posted : 31 July 2023
In a tense final, reigning champions Spain emerged victorious on penalties against a resilient Germany side to secure their fifth Women's U19 EURO title.

Under the guidance of Sonia Bermúdez, Spain took control of the match from the outset, while Germany found themselves chasing the game. Despite their relentless efforts to disrupt Spain's flow, Germany struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, as Spain's solid four-player defense, led by Maite Zubieta, thwarted their advances.

Both teams had few genuine scoring chances in the first half, with the best opportunities arising from goalkeeping mistakes. Mara Alber capitalized on Txell Font's mis-hit clearance, while Laia Martret narrowly missed the target after Rebecca Adamczyk's wayward punt.

The second half saw an increase in intensity from Germany, with Sophie Natchigall's precise through ball almost resulting in a goal for Alara Sehitler. The match remained wide open, and in the final minutes, Lucía Corrales came close to scoring for Spain, only to be denied by the post.

With the game still deadlocked at the end of regular time, both teams fought tenaciously during extra time. Germany, who had already played extra time in the semi-finals, pushed forward with determination, but the contest ultimately headed to penalties.

In the penalty shootout, Olaya confidently converted Spain's first kick, and Jella Veit and Silvia Lloris followed suit for Germany. Vanessa Diehms' attempt struck the post, giving Érika the opportunity to give Spain the advantage.

Miriam Hils kept Germany in the shootout, and their hopes were lifted when Lucía Corrales missed her penalty. However, the pressure got to Paulina Bartz, Sandra Villafañe, and ultimately, Pauline Deutsch, whose missed kick ensured Spain's victory and their fifth Women's U19 EURO title.

The thrilling final in Leuven ended with Spain celebrating another triumphant campaign in the championship.
