Spain's Young Star Yamal Makes History, Sends France Packing in Euro 2024 Semifinal

Posted : 09 July 2024

Lamine Yamal, at just 16 years old, etched his name in history as the youngest-ever goalscorer in Euro tournament history, propelling Spain to a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over France in the Euro 2024 semifinals held in Munich on Tuesday.

The match started in dramatic fashion as Randal Kolo Muani nodded in a pinpoint cross from Kylian Mbappe in the 9th minute, giving France an early lead. However, Spain swiftly turned the tide with two quickfire goals within four minutes, starting with Yamal's spectacular long-range strike into the top corner past goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Dani Olmo then extended Spain's lead in the 25th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball with a low shot that deflected off Jules Kounde before finding the net.

Following their rapid turnaround, Spain exhibited masterful control of the midfield, opting for possession over counter-attacks to safeguard their advantage. This strategic dominance effectively nullified France's attacking prowess throughout the remainder of the match, sealing Spain's place in the Euro 2024 final, where they will face either the Netherlands or England in Berlin.

With this victory, Spain not only advanced to their sixth win of the tournament, a record for Euros, but also positioned themselves one step closer to a historic fourth European championship title. Meanwhile, questions loom over France's inability to convert their attacking potential into goals, despite their formidable lineup that included Kylian Mbappe, who missed a crucial opportunity to equalize late in the game.
