Spain celebrates homecoming victory amidst football scandal fallout

In their first home match since winning the Women's World Cup, Spain displayed their dominance by defeating Switzerland in Cordoba. The match began with both teams standing behind a banner reading "It's over, our fight is the global fight," addressing the recent scandal in Spanish football. Fans welcomed the Spanish team with a banner that expressed gratitude for their on and off-pitch efforts.
La Roja continued their winning streak in Group A4 of the Women's Nations League. Manchester United's Lucia Garcia capitalized on a mistake by Swiss keeper Elvira Herzog to score the opening goal in front of a record crowd of 14,194 fans for a Spain women's national team home match.
Aitana Bonmati, the World Cup's Golden Ball winner, added the second goal just before halftime and later made it 3-0 with an assist from her Barcelona teammate Alexia Putellas. Substitutes Inma Gabarro and Maite Oroz secured the fourth and fifth goals.
The homecoming was marked by a festive atmosphere, with World Cup champions Putellas and Irene Paredes parading the trophy before the match. The return of the Spanish team was overshadowed by a scandal, which began with a controversial kiss between the then-president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, and player Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup trophy presentation.
Hermoso stated that the kiss was not consensual, leading to a series of events, including Rubiales' resignation, the sacking of World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda, and player threats of a boycott. The boycott was averted after the players reached an agreement with the RFEF, which promised significant changes.
Rubiales faced legal action and a ban from going near Hermoso after her legal complaint, though he denied the allegations in court.
