Spain made history by reaching the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup for the first time with a remarkable display of firepower that eliminated Switzerland from the tournament.
After suffering a 4-0 defeat against Japan in their final group game, La Roja bounced back in spectacular fashion, scoring four goals in the first half of their match in front of a record crowd of 43,217 in New Zealand.
Aitana Bonmati opened the scoring for Spain before Laia Codina's unfortunate own goal brought Switzerland level. However, Spain quickly regained the lead through Alba Redondo's header, and Bonmati added a second to make it 3-1.
In an eventful first half, Codina redeemed herself by scoring Spain's fourth goal after a scramble inside the box. The Spanish team continued their attacking prowess after the break, with Jennifer Hermoso adding a fifth goal, securing her third goal of the tournament.
With this commanding victory, Jorge Vilda's side became the first team to advance to the quarter-finals. They will face the winners of the match between the Netherlands and South Africa in the next round.
Spain's performance was a testament to their resilience and determination. After their heavy defeat against Japan, they showed character and responded brilliantly to the critics. Manager Vilda made five changes to the starting lineup, including giving goalkeeper Cata Coll her debut. Despite Codina's unfortunate own goal, Spain played with confidence and cohesion, putting aside any past conflicts within the squad.
Their impressive performance demonstrated that they are a team united and determined to make their mark on the Women's World Cup. This victory marked their third win out of four games in the tournament and showcased their potential as serious contenders.
