Posted : 26 July 2023
Spain showcased their potential as serious contenders for the FIFA Women's World Cup title by routing Zambia and securing a spot in the last 16 with a game to spare. After comfortably defeating Costa Rica in their Group C opener, Spain continued their impressive form against Zambia.
Teresa Abelleira opened the scoring with a stunning long-range strike in the ninth minute, followed by Jenni Hermoso doubling the lead with a header on her 100th international appearance.
In the second half, Alba Redondo rounded the goalkeeper to extend the lead before Hermoso scored her 50th international goal after a VAR review.
Spain continued their dominance, and although Hermoso nearly completed her hat-trick, Redondo found the net again in the closing minutes, sealing a comprehensive victory for the Spanish side.
The triumph also secured Japan's progression to the next round, setting up a clash between Spain and Japan to determine the group's winner. Alexia Putellas, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, returned from injury and made an impact as she contributed to Spain's attacking prowess, impressively picking out Hermoso for one of the goals.
While Zambia fought hard to resist Spain's onslaught, their fatigue and Spain's quality ultimately led to three more goals for the Spanish team.
This victory marked Spain's 13th win out of 15 matches since their defeat against England in the Euro 2022 quarter-finals, showcasing their formidable form and making their competitors take notice.
