Spain 3-0 Japan: Lopez and Ruiz score in semi-finals

Posted : 03 August 2024

Spain secured their place in the Olympic semi-finals for the second consecutive Games with a convincing 3-0 victory over Japan in Lyon. Goals from Fermin Lopez and Abel Ruiz ensured their progression to the next stage, where they will face Morocco, who also impressed with a 4-0 win over the USA. This match marked Spain's continued dominance and their bid to make another Olympic final.

Spain got off to a strong start with Lopez scoring a stunning goal from outside the box just 11 minutes into the game. His strike raised questions about whether Japan's goalkeeper, Leobrian Kokubo, could have done better. Despite Japan's efforts, including a disallowed equaliser from Mao Hosoya due to an offside call after a VAR review, Spain maintained their lead.

Before the break, Japan had a close call when Hosoya's header from Koki Saito's free-kick hit the crossbar. However, the second half saw Spain take control, with opportunities from Alex Baena, Aimar Oroz, and Lopez. Spain doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when Lopez scored again with a powerful shot from outside the area, leaving Kokubo no chance.

Japan's Hosoya continued to challenge Spain’s defense, but goalkeeper Arnau Tenas made a crucial save to deny him. Spain put the game beyond reach when captain Ruiz scored from close range, sealing the victory and their place in the semi-finals.

Fermin Lopez was a standout performer, showcasing his pace and skill throughout the match. His contributions, including both goals, were pivotal in Spain’s success. Having already scored eight goals in La Liga this season, Lopez has proven himself as a key player on the big stage.

Lopez's performance in this match highlighted his potential to be a major asset for Spain as they aim for their first Olympic gold medal since Barcelona 1992. His dynamic play and goal-scoring ability have made him a player to watch.

Spain’s commanding performance against Japan sets them up well for their upcoming semi-final clash with Morocco. With Lopez in top form and the team displaying strong cohesion, Spain is positioned as a serious contender for the Olympic title.
