Human rights activist and former presidential aspirant Sowore created a scene on Saturday with his antics as he broke protocol to occupy the seat reserved for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the VVIP section, which was exclusively designated for the Lagos State Executive.
The VVIP section was reserved for the governor, as well as the Chairman and Director General of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade.
Sowore, who participated in the race, went to sit at the governor's table alongside his entourage after the governor and other top officials left to present medals to the winners at the podium.
Drama nearly erupted when Sowore insisted that he would not vacate the governor's seat, even boasting that no one could force him to leave.
However, it took the meticulous and diplomatic intervention of the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, before security officials escorted him out.
Meanwhile, former Bayelsa State Commissioner of Sports, Opukiri Jones-Ere, who witnessed the incident, expressed his disappointment in Sowore.
"It's such an unfortunate event, and if I had only heard about it, I wouldn't have believed it. But sitting in the VIP section alongside the Chairman of the National Sports Commission and the Director General, I saw firsthand what happened, and it was truly pathetic.
"It is sad that a man of his calibre would stoop so low as to occupy the seat reserved for the governor. The governor had merely stepped onto the podium to present medals, and Sowore forcefully took over his seat."
"And when the DG of the NSC approached him as a friend, Sowore asked if the DG was not a big man himself. Everywhere in the world, we have VIP sections, and we respect our leaders, but today, Sowore's behavior was very petty and disgraceful."
"Unfortunately, I used to hold him in high regard, but after what I witnessed today, I am more than disappointed in him and what he stands for."
"I am, however, very happy that despite the minor distraction caused by Sowore, it did not affect the quality and successful organization of the race, which many have described as a world-class sporting showpiece."
