Southgate Eyes Euro 2024 Glory in Potential Final Chapter as England Manager

Posted : 06 June 2024

Nearly a decade after he began repairing England's tarnished reputation, Gareth Southgate is approaching his end game with the opportunity to cement his legacy by winning Euro 2024. As he likely enters his final major tournament as England's manager, the stakes are high. England has never won the European Championship and is still waiting for Southgate to deliver a major trophy after several close calls.

Southgate's contract with the Football Association expires at the end of the year, and he has not agreed to a new deal. He has been linked with a potential move to Manchester United, where Erik ten Hag's future remains uncertain despite an unexpected FA Cup triumph. Southgate hinted that if England wins the Euro, he might consider retirement. "I've never spoken with a club in all my time in the job. I think that would be disrespectful to the position I hold," he said. He emphasized his focus on the tournament, noting, "The ambition has been to win a tournament."

England enters the Euros as one of the top contenders and should easily navigate Group C, where they face Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia. This position is a stark contrast to the low point of English football when Southgate took over eight years ago. A surprise run to the 2018 World Cup semifinals and a final appearance at the Covid-delayed European Championship in 2021 restored credibility and hope among fans. However, Southgate has yet to deliver the coveted silverware that England has craved since their 1966 World Cup victory.

While Southgate has transformed England into a formidable team, he must now prove he can lead them to victory. His tactical caution has been criticized for stifling the team's attacking talent. Yet, with stars like Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, and Bukayo Saka, England has the potential to achieve Euro glory. Southgate acknowledges the unique ability of international football to unite the nation and hopes to take fans on another memorable journey. "Seven, eight years ago, it didn't quite feel the same. But now there's a strong connection, an excitement," he said, expressing his desire to fulfill the nation's high expectations.
