Southampton Football Club, currently in the relegation zone of the Premier League, has officially announced the appointment of Russell Martin as their new coach, bringing excitement for Super Eagles duo Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu who have been seeking more playing time under the previous coach, Rubén Sellés.
The news of Martin's hiring was released through Southampton's official website on Wednesday evening, as the club prepares for the upcoming pre-season preparations.
Martin, who previously worked at Swansea City, decided to join Southampton a year before the conclusion of his contract with the Welsh club.
The 37-year-old coach has committed to a three-year contract with Southampton, with both parties reaching a favorable agreement.
Interestingly, Martin has prior experience working with players of Nigerian descent, such as Matthew Sorinola, who played an impressive 76 games under Martin's guidance at Milton Keynes Dons and Swansea City.
Additionally, David Kasumu had a significant impact under Martin's coaching, participating in 47 matches during their time together at MK Dons, which stands as the highest number of matches played under any coach since turning professional.
For both Aribo and Onuachu, their playing time was limited under former Southampton boss Rubén Sellés.
Onuachu, the striker who joined the Saints from Racing Genk in January, started only three matches in the Premier League, while Aribo managed just two starts.
However, with the arrival of a new manager at St. Mary's Stadium in the form of Russell Martin, the Super Eagles duo will be hopeful of receiving increased opportunities to showcase their skills and contribute more to the team during the upcoming season.
