Southampton signs Nigeria-eligible CB released by Arsenal

Southampton, the EFL Championship club, has secured the signing of Nigerian central defender Zach Awe, who hails from Greenwich, United Kingdom, after he was released by Arsenal last month due to his decision not to extend his contract with the club.
As reported by Daily Telegraph sports reporter Mike McGrath on social media, Southampton has reached an agreement to bring in Awe, and the 19-year-old talent is now eager to compete for a first-team spot at centre-back under the management of Russell Martin in the upcoming season.
Although Awe left Arsenal as a free agent, the club is entitled to compensation since they offered him a new contract, and he is under the age of 24.
Despite training with the senior squad on several occasions, Awe's chances to feature in Arsenal's first team were limited under manager Mikel Arteta, leading him to seek new opportunities elsewhere.
During his time at the Emirates Stadium, Awe received just one call-up for a first-team game, where he served as a non-playing substitute in a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 10, 2022.
Initially joining Arsenal as a right fullback, the physically adept player was later shifted to a central defensive role, where he aims to make his mark and progress with Southampton in the upcoming season.
