Southampton's Home Woes Continue as Juric's Side Struggles to Stay Afloat

Posted : 15 February 2025

Southampton's struggles at home continued as they failed to capitalize on an opportunity to close the gap on Leicester after the Foxes' defeat to Arsenal. Their lone home league victory this season remains a 1-0 win against Everton in November. Despite Kamaldeen Sulemana's well-taken goal, the Saints once again lacked attacking potency.

Matheus Fernandes worked hard to spark creativity, but most of Southampton's attempts came from outside the box, posing little threat to Bournemouth’s defense. Paul Onuachu also found it difficult to hold up play, aside from his assist for Sulemana, while substitute Cameron Archer squandered a late chance against goalkeeper Kepa.

A glimmer of hope had emerged for Southampton following their crucial victory over Ipswich two weeks ago, but that optimism quickly faded. In addition to their league struggles, they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Burnley, further compounding their woes.

Their tally of just nine points after 25 games in the 2024-25 campaign is among the lowest in top-flight history, with only Sheffield United in 1975-76 having a worse record at this stage. Despite their dire situation, manager Ivan Juric remains adamant that his players are giving their all, though their efforts have not translated into results.

Juric insisted that Southampton's predicament is not due to a lack of commitment, emphasizing the team’s fighting spirit. "We have good spirit, we scored and created chances, and played aggressively, but it wasn’t enough," he said.

Acknowledging their difficult position, he admitted that while there were some positives, they were not sufficient to secure points. Nonetheless, he vowed to keep pushing for survival, stating that as long as there is a chance, his team will continue to fight to stay in the Premier League.
