Southampton confirmed two significant deadline day deals involving Nigerian players just before the close of the January transfer window on Monday night. The Premier League club made moves to strengthen their squad, securing a promising forward and recalling a young defender.
Victor Udoh, a talented Nigerian striker, was transferred to Southampton from Belgian club Antwerp. The 21-year-old put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal, pending international clearance, and is now set to join the Saints’ first-team squad.
Udoh’s journey to Southampton began when he joined Antwerp in 2023 from the Hypebuzz FC academy in Abuja. Since his arrival in Belgium, he has made 28 appearances for the senior team and impressed with his performances.
In addition to his senior outings, Udoh made a strong impact with Antwerp’s second team, Royal Antwerp II. There, he scored 12 goals in 21 appearances, showcasing his potential as a promising forward.
Once his international clearance is completed, Udoh will link up with his new teammates at Southampton and begin training ahead of his potential debut.
In a separate move, Southampton recalled 21-year-old defender Zach Awe from his loan spell at League Two club Accrington Stanley. The central defender has returned to the club to undergo rehabilitation after sustaining an injury.
During his time at Accrington Stanley, Awe impressed with his consistent performances, featuring in 27 matches across various competitions. He also scored his first senior goal in November, helping Accrington defeat Chesterfield in a League Two encounter.
