South Korea, Saudi Arabia Advance in World Cup Qualifiers Amid Thrilling Matches

Posted : 07 June 2024

South Korea secured their spot in the next round of Asia's World Cup qualifiers with a commanding 7-0 victory over Singapore on Thursday. Lee Kang-in opened the scoring with a powerful shot in the ninth minute, followed by a header from Joo Min-kyu that doubled the lead. Captain Son Heung-min added two goals after the break, with additional goals from Lee, Bae Jun-ho, and Hwang Hee-chan, ensuring South Korea topped Group C ahead of China and Thailand.

In other matches, Saudi Arabia advanced to the third phase with a 3-0 win over Pakistan, joining Oman, Palestine, Bahrain, and Jordan in the next round of preliminaries. China's Behram Abduweli kept his team's hopes alive with a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Thailand, despite Fei Nanduo's missed penalty. This draw leaves China three points ahead of Thailand with one game remaining, maintaining their chances for further advancement.

Oman moved forward from Group D after a 3-0 victory over Taiwan, assisted by Kyrgyzstan's 1-1 draw with Malaysia. Palestine also secured their advancement with a 0-0 draw against Lebanon, finishing second in Group I behind Australia, who won 2-0 against Bangladesh. Saudi Arabia, with two goals from Firas Al-Buraikan, and Jordan both progressed from Group G, while Bahrain's goalless draw with Yemen confirmed their second-place finish in Group H behind the UAE.

Japan continued their perfect run in Group B with a 5-0 win over Myanmar, keeping North Korea just a point behind second-placed Syria. In Group E, Mehdi Taremi's hat-trick helped Iran to a 4-2 victory over Hong Kong, with Uzbekistan also progressing after a 3-1 win against Turkmenistan. Afghanistan's unexpected 0-0 draw with Qatar kept them level with India, who also drew 0-0 with Kuwait, in the closely contested Group A standings, trailing only the group-winning Qatar.
