South Korea Coach Hong Myung-bo Celebrates Thrilling 3-2 Victory Over Iraq

Posted : 16 October 2024

Hong Myung-bo received a warm reception from fans as South Korea triumphed in a thrilling World Cup qualifier against Iraq, winning 3-2 in Yongin on Tuesday. This victory suggests that the coach has weathered the criticism surrounding his controversial appointment.

Just a month earlier, Hong faced jeers during his debut, a disappointing 0-0 draw against Palestine, following his replacement of Juergen Klinsmann in July. He also defended his appointment before South Korea's parliamentary Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, denying claims of favoritism by the Korea Football Association (KFA).

The South Korean team has rebounded impressively since that rocky start, securing away victories in Oman and Jordan, culminating in Tuesday's win that positions them strongly for an 11th consecutive World Cup appearance.

After the match, Hong praised his players for their organization and teamwork, highlighting the importance of chemistry on the field. He expressed satisfaction with how substitutes contributed to the team's success, indicating a developing culture of commitment and adaptability among the players.

With key players like captain Son Heung-min and forward Hwang Hee-chan sidelined due to injuries, younger talents stepped up to fill the gap in scoring. Oh Se-hun netted the opening goal just before halftime, while Oh Hyeon-gyu, coming off the bench, scored the second goal, and veteran Lee Jae-sung added the third.

Oh Hyeon-gyu credited Hong for instilling confidence in him and providing clarity in his role. Looking ahead, South Korea carries a three-point lead over Jordan and Iraq as they prepare for their next match against winless Kuwait in mid-November, with hopes of securing direct qualification for the finals. After the game, a relaxed Hong even managed to joke about the crowd's support, saying, "I don't know why people didn't boo."
