Posted : 17 November 2023
The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in South America delivered an exhilarating day of football as Colombia stunned Brazil with a comeback, securing a 2-1 victory in Barranquilla. Luis Diaz, the Liverpool star, played a crucial role, scoring two goals in the 75th and 79th minutes.
The thrilling win was particularly special for Diaz, as his father, recently released from ELN guerrilla captivity, watched from the stands, almost fainting in excitement after the second goal. Despite Brazil initially leading with a Martinelli goal in the 4th minute, they collapsed in the closing minutes, marking Colombia's first-ever World Cup qualifying win against Brazil.
In another significant upset, Uruguay defeated Argentina 2-0 in Buenos Aires, handing the world champions their first defeat in 15 consecutive home games of World Cup qualification. Ronald Araujo capitalized on a defensive error to score in the first half (41st minute), and Darwin Núñez secured victory with a goal in the 87th minute. Lionel Messi, starting in the lineup for Argentina, couldn't prevent the defeat, with Uruguay claiming their first win against Argentina in 10 years.
Meanwhile, in a battle between the only two teams yet to secure a victory, Bolivia secured its first points of the campaign with a 2-0 win over Peru. Henri Vaca, playing for Bnei Reina, scored his first goal for Bolivia in the 20th minute, and Ramiro Vaca sealed the victory with a goal in the 88th minute.
The win marked a significant turnaround for Bolivia, breaking their streak of four consecutive defeats in the qualifiers. On the other hand, Peru was left with only one point in their balance sheet, dropping to the last place in the group standings.
