SNWFSC set to champion campaign

Posted : 08 October 2024

Ahead of the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child, the Sapphire Nigeria Women's Football Supporters Club has promised to continue its tradition of using this day to support girls and increase awareness about the gender inequalities faced by girls worldwide.

To foster this, the Club has announced it will organize the 2024 Sapphire International Day of the Girl Child event with the theme: "Empowering the Next Generation of Female Leaders through Sports."

The event will take place at the Albati Barracks Stadium, Ojuelegba, Lagos, Nigeria, on October 12, 2024.

The purpose of the event is to bring together former Nigerian internationals, sports administrators, students, and the general public to celebrate and inspire the next generation of female leaders, using sports as a tool.

During the program, there will be seminars to engage participants, mentorship activities, leadership training, and a football competition featuring twelve teams. Scouting activities, empowerment initiatives, and entertainment will also be included.

Additionally, the program aims to impact about 300 girls aged between 12 and 16.

Educational support will be provided through the distribution of books, uniforms, and study materials for at least 100 girls.

Furthermore, the event will provide an opportunity to scout at least 20 players for potential entry into the Nigeria Women Football League system.

Last year, over 400 spectators attended the program. This year, attendance is expected to double.

Medical teams will be on-site for the event. A gynecologist, a dentist, and other medical doctors will speak on preventive care, with many prizes available to be won, thanks to supporting companies.

Companies such as Unilever and UAC Foods are coming on board to support the initiative.

The Sapphire Nigeria Women's Football Supporters Club, as a facilitator of the International Day of the Girl Child, aims to use sports as a tool to empower young girls, thereby helping to reduce gender-based violence, human trafficking involving girls, and the issue of out-of-school children.

The initiative also intends to provide funding for the educational needs of young girls, including tuition payments, provision of uniforms, support for meals, transportation, and more.
