Slot Demands More from Liverpool Ahead of Crucial PSG Clash

Posted : 10 March 2025

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has emphasized the importance of his team’s upcoming Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain, calling it the second of "three finals" in a crucial week. Despite holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, Slot acknowledged that his side will need to improve significantly to secure a place in the quarterfinals.

Liverpool managed to withstand heavy pressure from PSG in Paris, thanks largely to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who made nine crucial saves. While Liverpool has never lost a European tie after winning the first leg away, Slot remains wary of PSG’s threat, especially with Luis Enrique expressing confidence that his team can turn the tie around.

Slot’s concerns were heightened after Liverpool’s sluggish first-half performance in their 3-1 victory over Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday. The bottom-placed Saints shocked Anfield by taking the lead into halftime, forcing Slot to make three substitutions at the break.

However, a second-half turnaround led by Darwin Nunez and two penalties from Mohamed Salah secured the win, extending Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table. Despite the result, Slot admitted his team’s intensity was lacking, which could prove costly against PSG.

With the League Cup final against Newcastle also approaching, Liverpool is still in contention for a treble under Slot’s leadership. Reflecting on the Southampton match, he acknowledged that the performance was below the required standard, warning that a significant improvement is needed against PSG.

"If I compare it with today, we need to go three, four, five, six, or seven steps up in intensity if we want to reach the next round," Slot stated. As Liverpool prepares for two decisive fixtures, the manager is hoping for a stronger showing to maintain their European and domestic ambitions.
