Manchester United's legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson will conclude his role as a global ambassador following the termination of his lucrative contract by the club's part-owners, INEOS. Ferguson, who has been a prominent figure in the Old Trafford director's box for many years, initially signed his ambassadorial agreement with the club in 2013, earning approximately £2.16 million ($2.82 million) annually.
According to a club source, the decision to end the contract was amicable, as Ferguson, now 82, is looking to reduce his commitments while remaining welcome at the club.
The termination of Ferguson's contract comes amidst widespread job cuts at Manchester United, part of a broader strategy to curb expenses as the club has faced financial losses for an extended period. Ferguson is set to officially step down from his ambassadorial role at the conclusion of the current season.
His tenure as manager was marked by unprecedented success, leading the team to a remarkable 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League victories before retiring in 2013.
Currently, Manchester United finds itself in 14th place in the Premier League standings, following a disappointing eighth-place finish last season. Despite investing over £200 million on new players during the offseason, the club continues to struggle under the management of Erik ten Hag, who has overseen a total expenditure of around £600 million on transfers since his appointment before the 2022-23 season.
The impact of the cost-cutting measures on other club ambassadors, such as former players Andy Cole, Park Ji-sung, Dwight Yorke, Denis Irwin, and Bryan Robson, remains uncertain. The decision to part ways with Ferguson has drawn strong reactions from former players, with Eric Cantona labeling it "scandalous" and Rio Ferdinand emphasizing that "no one is safe" at Manchester United.
Both Cantona and Ferdinand, who played under Ferguson, expressed their discontent on social media, underscoring the enduring respect and loyalty fans and former players hold for the legendary manager.
