Simeone Confident of Atletico Comeback Despite First-Leg Defeat to Real Madrid

Diego Simeone expressed disappointment over Atletico Madrid's inability to make the most of their dominance in their 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash. Despite controlling large portions of the game, Atletico struggled to capitalize on their chances, allowing their rivals to take the advantage.

 

Simeone acknowledged the challenge of maintaining balance against a team like Real Madrid, emphasizing that his squad managed the counter-attacking threat well but lacked efficiency in the final third.

 

However, the Atletico manager took positives from his side’s response to conceding an early goal, highlighting their resilience and determination. He remains optimistic about overturning the deficit in the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium, citing last year's comeback against Inter Milan at the same stage as a source of confidence.

 

Simeone believes his team will have an added boost from their home crowd, which could prove decisive in their efforts to advance.

 

Simeone also pointed to a key moment late in the match when Kylian Mbappe failed to set up Vinicius Jr for what could have been a third goal for Real Madrid. He suggested that escaping further damage gives Atletico a better chance of staging a comeback. Looking ahead, the Argentine is confident his side can turn the tie around, viewing the narrow defeat as an opportunity rather than a setback.
