Silvio Berlusconi, the former president of AC Milan and Italian Prime Minister, has passed away at the age of 86. The charismatic media mogul died on June 12, 2023, at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan.
Berlusconi had been receiving medical treatment since April for a lung infection, which was later revealed to be connected to an undisclosed case of chronic leukemia. He had previously undergone surgery in 2016 to replace a faulty aortic valve and had been hospitalized with COVID-19 in September 2020.
AC Milan paid tribute to Berlusconi on their official website, expressing their deep sadness and extending condolences to his family, associates, and close friends. They highlighted their commitment to continuing with new ambitions, challenges, and victories, carrying the spirit of Milan and acknowledging Berlusconi's significant role in the club's history.
Berlusconi, who was married twice, is survived by five children. His career began in property development, and he went on to establish Mediaset while also serving as the leader of four governments during his political career.
In 1994, he was first elected as the Prime Minister, and his second term from 2001 to 2006 became the longest tenure of an Italian leader since World War II. Berlusconi returned to power in 2008 but resigned in 2011 amidst a financial crisis.
On the sporting front, he owned AC Milan from 1986 to 2017. During his ownership, the club achieved great success, winning eight league titles, the Coppa Italia, and five UEFA Champions League trophies.
