Showtime Flag, the leading co-ed flag football league in the world, has earmarked N20 million in prizes for the Bowl Series Season Two competition.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the league, Manal Nassar, confirmed this development at a news conference in Lagos on Tuesday.
Established on July 7, 2023, Showtime Flag is the largest co-ed semi-professional flag football league in Nigeria. Founded by Azeezah Amida, the league will be played in a 7-on-7 co-ed format.
Nassar stated that the top six teams in the tournament would advance to the playoffs to compete for a place in the championship game, known as ‘The Showtime Bowl’. She added that the winner of the Bowl would receive a cash prize, a trophy, and player rings.
The sport provides a platform where men and women can compete, connect, and showcase their skills while building a strong, passionate community beyond just a rugby league.
Regarding expectations for the game, Nassar mentioned that Season Two would begin on September 6 and run until December 15, lasting 16 weeks. She noted that the competition is a pro league game with 12 teams competing for the grand prize of N20 million.
“The participating teams are the Warriors Flag Football, Outlaws Athletics, Spartans FC, Panthers Sport, Lagos Raptors, Off-Szn Athletics, Lagos Rebels, LA Knights, Titans Athletics, Lagos Mavericks, Wolverines, and Lagos Hawks.
“The winner will receive six million naira, the second runner-up will get four million naira, and the third and fourth place teams will each receive N2.5 million.”
Nassar added that other positions would also be rewarded with cash prizes. She highlighted the impact of Season One, held in 2023 in Lagos, and how participation had promoted the game. Season Two is expected to be bigger and better, promoting, developing, and improving the game's followership while educating the public about flag football.
Nassar mentioned that the league also has Showtime Streets, where players are discovered from the streets, developed, and integrated into the Pro League.
The CEO noted that having both male and female players offers a significant opportunity for wider reach in Nigeria, Africa, and the world.
Adebare Adejumo, Showtime Flag Commissioner, also spoke about the second edition, stating that it would discover world-class athletes, which aligns with Showtime Pro and Showtime Streets' mission. He remarked that the league had experienced this in the Community Cup and expected the Showtime Bowl Series XI to be spectacular.
“That is why we are running programs like Showtime Streets, where we scout for younger players. Currently, the league has expanded to include players aged 15 to 25, as opposed to older players.
“I mean, we still have older players, but the league’s demographics have shifted towards younger players,” he said.
Adejumo explained that this shift aims to give the league and the sport a futuristic view.
