A 10-man Shooting Stars of Ibadan defied the odds as they broke their Optima Energy Gold Cup final jinx, emerging as champions of the 12th edition by defeating defending champions Beyond Limits 2-0 in a thrilling clash at the Remo Stars Stadium on Saturday.
It was heartbreak for Beyond Limits, who, despite an impressive performance, were undone by the more experienced and determined Oluyole Warriors.
Just after the half-hour mark, Shooting Stars reminded the fans watching the Optima Energy Gold Cup finale of their capabilities with both ball control and tactical play.
In the 32nd minute, the referee correctly awarded 3SC a penalty after Sodiq brought down Olaniyi Fasanmi, who had been put through on goal by Utim. Aliyu Abubakar stepped up and converted the penalty, giving Shooting Stars the lead as they entered the break.
Two minutes into the second half, 3SC lost their captain, Taye Muritala, who received his marching orders for a needless foul on Beyond Limits' striker.
Shooting Stars' second goal came in the 72nd minute, when Desmond Ojietefian rose highest to connect with a superb delivery, nodding the ball into the net from range for the team's second goal.
Beyond Limits were left to lament their missed chances, as the Oluyole Warriors were crowned champions after their fourth attempt at winning the final.
Shooting Stars were rewarded with a sum of ₦2,000,000 from Proud Sponsors Optima Energy, while Beyond Limits took home ₦1,000,000 as the runners-up.
For the individual awards, Olisa Emmanuel of Beyond Limits received the Golden Glove award after keeping three clean sheets en route to the final.
Benin Premier League side Association Sportive de la Vallée de l'Ouémé (ASVO) FC were awarded the Best Behaved Team, while Stephen Idowu received the Best Referee award.
Deserving of recognition, Kparobo Arierhi claimed the Highest Goalscorer award with his three goals and one assist.
The tournament's Most Valuable Player award went to Shooting Stars' attacker Aliyu Abubakar, while his coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, was honored with the Best Coach award for the off-season tournament.
