Shooting Stars SC Coach, Ogunbote, sets target for next season

Just as the new 2023/2024 regular season is approaching, the head coach of Oyo State-Sponsored Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan, Gbenga Ogunbote has set a high target for the team if he will continue in his position on the bench.
Africa Sport Network (ASN) reports that the Shooting Stars SC, fondly referred to as "3SC," produced just above average performances in the just concluded 2022/2023 season.
The Ibadan warlord could only muster 6th position behind unbeaten Bendel Insurance, Remo Stars, eventual winners of the league, Enyimba International FC, Akwa United and Plateau United on the Abridged 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Group A standings with 23 points from 18 matches.
The Ogunbote-coached team won five matches, drew eight and had two losses in the entire campaign, and thereby lost out in the Super 6 campaign which could only accommodate the first three teams.
Ogunbote, reflecting on his future with the club, stated in an interview on Monday that he loves getting results, and if there were no conditions to get good results, he will leave Shooting Stars.
To achieve his desired dreams, Ogunbote now set his sight on signing players from Mali and Burkina Faso.
The Shooting Stars head coach, Gbenga Ogunbote noted that he was open to leaving the club if the club doesn’t meet the conditions that would enable him to achieve positive results at the club.
"I like results and if there are no conditions to get good results, I will leave 3SC, but the Chairman of the club has promised a lot, I hope they will deliver.
"It was sad that my team could only celebrate avoiding relegation in the just concluded season, I wanted more.
"I would have gone. Good or bad, I have seen everything and I am aware you leave when the ovation is loudest.
"I like the transparency of the current 3SC Chairman, it’s enough for me to stay. I must also praise the state government, I was here before and I knew how the Lekan Salami Stadium was," he enthused.
On his plans for the next season, Ogunbote declared that he would love to fortify the team more.
"Last season would have been great but we got it wrong in the first stanza, we have overcome our challenges and learned our lessons.
"With the current squad that we have, the best we can aim for is premier league safety.
"We’ve identified players good enough to fortify the team, just yesterday we had players from Mali and Burkina Faso.
"Sometimes you look for players from neighboring countries and get their economic rights, if we have the capacity, we are going to sign them.
"We need more financial support to buy quality players and fight for the title," Ogunbote said.
The highly revered coach noted that privatisation of the club would not be a bad idea.
"It’s a good idea, I must commend the management of this club for their transparency.
"3SC has a massive fanbase home and away, the club should leverage this.
"We have maybe two players that are our players because we don’t have money to buy players outrightly.
"Let’s have a reasonable number of players we can own 100 per cent, there should be a certain amount of money meant to buy players apart from the money used in running the club," he advised.
