2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 28: Shooting Stars SC coach, Ogunbote, hails players' fighting spirit despite loss to Katsina United

Posted : 08 March 2025

Katsina United FC on Friday night scored late to earn a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Shooting Stars FC (3SC) of Ibadan.

The 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 28 encounter at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium was heading for a stalemate before substitute Ahmed Taofeek scored in the fifth minute of seven minutes added time to give the Dikko Warriors the much-deserved three points.

The Dikko Warriors players threw everything into the game but were well-contained by the Shooting Stars defense.

After both sides battled to a goalless first half, there was more to play for in the second half, and it was the home side who were more adventurous.

With 3SC goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal standing firm between the sticks, the backline displayed brave performances to thwart the efforts of the home side.

In the dying minutes of the encounter, Katsina United scored a heartbreaking goal, courtesy of Ahmed Taofeek, whose shot took a slight deflection off a 3SC defender, beating Mustapha Lawal in the process.

The Technical Adviser of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), Gbenga Ogunbote, believes his players deserve commendation after Friday's painful 0-1 loss to Katsina United.

In his post-match interview, the 3SC coach, who described the defeat as unfortunate, attributed it to fatigue, which he said prevented his players from expressing themselves.

"It is unfortunate that we lost towards the last minute of added time when we conceded the goal.

"I think the boys have done very well. They put in their best, considering what we faced when we were coming here.

"We arrived here yesterday evening, so you can see the boys could not really express themselves due to fatigue."

The coach, fondly called "The Oracle," said the team had already put the defeat behind them, looking forward to the next match, which is another away fixture against Akwa United.

"This game has come and gone. We are thinking of the next game. That's it," added Coach Ogunbote.

Up next for Dikko Warriors is a trip to Kaduna for MD 29 fixture against Niger Tornadoes next Sunday.
