Sheffield Wednesday defender hopes for Super Eagles after TOTW inclusion

Posted : 01 April 2025

Sheffield Wednesday defender Michael Ihiekwe has been recognized for his excellent performance by earning a spot in Whoscored’s Championship Team of the Week. His inclusion comes after an impressive display in the team's 1-1 draw against Cardiff City.

Born in Liverpool, Ihiekwe has pledged his international future to Nigeria and is hopeful of receiving a Super Eagles call-up. The center-back continues to impress with his consistency and defensive contributions.

In the recent fixture at Cardiff City Stadium, Ihiekwe scored for the second consecutive away match in the Championship. His goal, a crucial header from Barry Bannan’s corner, secured a valuable point for Sheffield Wednesday and marked his 100th league appearance.

Isaak Davies had earlier given Cardiff the lead in the first half, but Ihiekwe's equalizer just past the hour ensured the Owls avoided defeat. This was his second goal of the campaign, following his earlier strike in a 3-2 victory over Norwich City on March 11.

As part of the Championship Team of the Week, he was placed in a three-man central defense alongside Watford’s Francisco Sierralta and Mattie Pollock in a 3-4-3 setup. His defensive reliability was key to earning this recognition.

The EFL highlighted his standout contribution, noting that he made 15 clearances and won seven aerial duels. His dominant display earned him a WhoScored rating of 8.26, making him one of the best performers of the matchday.

Having fully recovered from an Achilles injury that kept him out for much of the season’s first half, Ihiekwe has now played the full 90 minutes in Sheffield Wednesday’s last twelve league matches. The defender, who previously played alongside Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi at Rotherham United, also had stints with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cheltenham Town, Tranmere Rovers, and Accrington Stanley.
