Sheffield United has secured the signing of goalkeeper Ivo Grbic from Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee. The 28-year-old Croatian international, who joined Atletico in 2020, will be competing with Wes Foderingham for the goalkeeper position.
Grbic, who served as the backup to Jan Oblak at Atletico, expressed his excitement about the move to the Premier League, considering it a significant challenge and a fantastic experience. Despite not having played for club or country this season, Grbic is eager to contribute and believes he is ready for the challenge.
Having signed a contract until 2027, Grbic brings experience from playing in top leagues in France and Spain, as well as participating in the Champions League with Lille and making several appearances for Atletico last season.
The goalkeeper, part of Croatia's 2022 World Cup squad, is determined to make a positive impact with Sheffield United. Manager Chris Wilder emphasized the club's enthusiasm in securing Grbic on a long-term deal, highlighting the belief that he can be a valuable addition to the squad. Grbic's signing follows the earlier acquisition of Ben Brereton Diaz on loan from Villarreal.
As Sheffield United currently occupies the bottom position in the Premier League and has faced challenges this season, the addition of Grbic aims to strengthen the team's goalkeeping options and contribute to their efforts to improve performance and results.
