Sevilla defeats Manchester United in the second leg
Posted : 22 April 2023
United left Europe with a whimper as they were much below their best, producing practically little offensively, being outmuscled in the middle of the field, and making two horrible errors on defense.
Youssef En-Nesyri gave the Spanish team the lead after only eight minutes thanks to a terrible mistake by Harry Maguire, and Sevilla extended their lead shortly after halftime thanks to defender Loic Bade's looping header.
Nine minutes from the end, En-Nesyri sealed Sevilla's win and humiliated United by taking advantage of yet another horrible mistake from goalkeeper David de Gea.
After cruising to a 2-0 victory in the first leg at Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag's team managed to surrender five goals in the course of 90 minutes - two late own goals in Manchester and three times in Spain - to blow their opportunity of winning the match and elimination from the European competition.
This was the first of several games that might have determined United's season; on Sunday, they play Brighton at Wembley in the FA Cup semifinals, and on April 27, they play Tottenham in a crucial Premier League encounter. United failed miserably in this test.
On May 11 and 18, Sevilla and Juventus will face off in a semifinal matchup over two legs. Sporting was defeated by the Italian team 2-1 overall in the quarterfinal.
