Sevilla confirmed on Saturday that coach Quique Sanchez Flores will leave the club at the end of the season, and expressed their desire to retain departing captain Jesus Navas. The seven-time Europa League champions currently sit 12th in LaLiga, a significant improvement from the relegation battle they faced in 16th place when Sanchez Flores took over in December.
Although Sanchez Flores' contract was set to run until June 2025, Sevilla's chief, Jose Maria del Nido Carrasco, announced that both parties had mutually agreed on his departure. "I want to thank him. The club was in a very difficult situation, and he managed to turn it around with a lot of hard work," Carrasco said during a Saturday news conference. "He achieved an objective that, although it hurts us to say, was difficult."
Additionally, Carrasco mentioned that Sevilla would offer captain Jesus Navas a lifetime contract. This announcement came after the club stated on Thursday that their record appearance-maker would leave at the end of the season, prompting Navas to release a statement on social media criticizing Sevilla. The 38-year-old player claimed he had "received no call" about renewing his contract, which expires in June, and expressed his desire to remain focused on playing for Spain in Euro 2024 if selected.
"There must have been a misunderstanding for which I will take responsibility, because I know Jesus is suffering a lot," said Carrasco. "If I sit down with Jesus for a minute, we will turn the situation around. From here, I offer him a lifetime contract so he can play here as long as he likes, and later work here in whatever he wants, because he deserves to be at Sevilla as long as he wants. If he decides to stick with his decision, I will respect it."
