Scott McTominay shines with double as Manchester United regret departure

Posted : 28 April 2025

Scott McTominay has experienced a remarkable transformation since leaving Manchester United for Napoli last year, with his performances for the Italian side playing a pivotal role in their pursuit of the Serie A title. His two goals in Napoli's 2-0 win over Torino on Sunday further highlighted his growing influence. The Manchester United faithful, who once had McTominay in their ranks, are left questioning whether they made a mistake in letting him go.

With four matches remaining in the Serie A season, Napoli currently sit three points clear of Inter Milan at the top of the table. McTominay’s contributions have been integral to their success, and he is on the cusp of winning silverware in his first season with the club. His progress since departing Manchester United contrasts sharply with the struggles of his former team, who now find themselves languishing in 14th place in the Premier League.

McTominay’s first goal against Torino came early in the game, just seven minutes in, after a defender’s deflection set him up perfectly to curl the ball into the net. Commentator Adam Summerton praised the Scottish midfielder's form, describing him as having the “dream season” and noting that his goals could lead Napoli to the coveted Scudetto.

The second goal came shortly after, with McTominay demonstrating his sharp instinct and clinical finishing. Summerton described him as "unstoppable," and his fellow commentator Tony Dorigo was equally impressed, saying that McTominay was "doing things that even he can’t believe." Dorigo marveled at his movement and composure in front of goal, highlighting how well the 28-year-old has adapted to life in Italy.

Having left Manchester United under the management of Erik Ten Hag, McTominay's departure was partly influenced by Financial Fair Play regulations, which allowed his transfer to be recorded as pure profit. Despite his exit from Old Trafford, McTominay has flourished in Italy, carrying his good form into his international duties with Scotland, where he continues to impress.

McTominay’s goal-scoring form has been exceptional this season, with 11 goals in Serie A, five of which came in a standout April. His ability to adapt to a new league, culture, and playing style has drawn praise from pundits, including Dorigo, who believes that Manchester United must now be questioning their decision to let McTominay go. His success in Italy serves as a testament to his growth as a player and his resilience in the face of change.

As the season draws to a close, McTominay’s performance in Italy has defied expectations. Summerton emphasized how impressive it is to see McTominay not only settling into Italian football but excelling at the highest level. Napoli fans have quickly fallen in love with him, and it’s clear why – McTominay’s journey in Naples is turning into a truly remarkable story.
