Schick Shines as Leverkusen Overcomes Dortmund 3-2 to Close in on Bayern

Posted : 11 January 2025

Bayer Leverkusen earned a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Friday, with Patrik Schick scoring twice in the first half to help close the gap to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to just one point. The match came at a time when Dortmund was already dealing with injuries, and a flu outbreak severely impacted their defensive lineup.

Just hours before the game, key players Emre Can, Nico Schlotterbeck, and Ramy Bensebaini were ruled out, leaving Dortmund vulnerable to Leverkusen’s quick attacks.

Leverkusen capitalized on Dortmund’s weakened defense early in the match, with Nathan Tella scoring within the first 25 seconds.

Schick quickly doubled the lead with a goal just eight minutes in, exploiting Dortmund’s defensive lapses. Despite the early setbacks, Dortmund responded with a goal from Jamie Gittens, but Schick quickly restored Leverkusen's two-goal advantage with his second goal in the 19th minute.

Dortmund showed some resilience with a late penalty from Serhou Guirassy, offering a glimmer of hope. However, Leverkusen held firm to secure their ninth consecutive win in all competitions.

Granit Xhaka emphasized that Leverkusen was focused on their own performance, not on Bayern Munich, and their victory put them in a strong position to challenge the leaders.

Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso opted to bench in-form Florian Wirtz due to an internal issue, adding further intrigue to the team's lineup.

The defeat leaves Dortmund in a precarious position, having won just one of their last five Bundesliga matches. With defensive problems mounting and several key players sidelined, Dortmund could fall as low as 10th by the end of the weekend.

Leverkusen, on the other hand, continues to build momentum, with Schick enjoying an impressive run of form, having scored 11 goals in his last six league appearances.
