SC Freiburg extends contract of Super Eagles-eligible goalkeeper
Posted : 14 July 2023
German Bundesliga club SC Freiburg has officially announced the contract extension of goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, who is eligible to represent the Super Eagles.
The specific details of the contract, including its duration and financial terms, have not been disclosed by the club.
Atubolu's decision to extend his contract ends speculation about his future, particularly regarding a potential transfer to Belgian giants RSC Anderlecht.
Atubolu, a Germany U21 international with Nigerian heritage, made his first-team debut for Freiburg in an October 2022 DFB-Pokal match against FC St. Pauli.
He also appeared in goal for Freiburg in Europa League fixtures and the DFB-Pokal round of 16 game against SV Sandhausen last season.
Having joined Freiburg from Sportfreunde Eintracht Freiburg in 2015, Atubolu progressed through the club's youth teams and eventually became the first-choice goalkeeper for the U23s.
Expressing his joy about the contract extension, Atubolu stated his loyalty to Freiburg, saying, "I am a Freiburg lad through and through and have already experienced a lot with the club. There was always a clear plan, and I am pleased that there is more to come. I am looking forward to it."
With the departure of Mark Flekken to Premier League side Brentford during the offseason, it is expected that Atubolu will have more opportunities to feature for the first team in the upcoming season.
