In the opening round of the Premier League, Mohamed Salah made a significant impact with a goal and an assist against Ipswich, yet he still faced criticism from former Premier League captain and manager Graham Souness. The 71-year-old Scot accused Salah of having a tendency to "dive" and further remarked that the Egyptian striker often "disappears when the team needs him."
Liverpool began the Arne Slott era with a strong performance, securing a 2-0 victory away against newly-promoted Ipswich. Salah was once again the standout player for the Reds, providing an assist for Diogo Jota's opening goal and scoring the first goal of the 2024/25 season, sealing the match's outcome.
However, Souness’s criticism of Salah did not wane. In an interview with Talk Sport before Liverpool's first home game of the season against Brentford, Souness reiterated his concerns, stating that Salah tends to vanish when the team faces challenges and needs him to step up. Despite this, Souness acknowledged Salah's remarkable contributions to Liverpool, conceding that the forward's "impressive statistics" earn him a spot in the club's all-time dream lineup.
The discussion around Salah's performance was further fueled by Simon Jordan, the former Crystal Palace chairman, who labeled Salah as "overrated" and suggested that his success is largely due to the quality of the team around him. Jordan’s remarks sparked controversy, as he admitted that his views might be unpopular, but he remained unconvinced of Salah's true abilities. Nevertheless, it was Salah who created Liverpool's first goal of the season and added his 212th goal for the club.
