Salah’s Brace Secures Liverpool’s Comeback Win Over Southampton

Posted : 25 November 2024

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League with a 3-2 victory over bottom side Southampton on Sunday, taking advantage of Manchester City's poor form. Trailing 2-1, Mohamed Salah scored twice in the second half to secure the win for Liverpool, bringing his season's tally to 10 goals.

With Manchester City losing 4-0 to Tottenham Hotspur the day before, Liverpool now holds an eight-point advantage over the defending champions, with 31 points from 12 games.

Salah, reflecting on his team's comeback, acknowledged the importance of the win, especially after being down 2-1. He praised the team’s game plan and expressed confidence in creating chances, despite Southampton’s strong early performance. With the upcoming match against Manchester City, Salah remains focused on extending Liverpool's lead to 11 points.

The match began with Southampton shooting themselves in the foot when their attempt to play out from the back resulted in a mistake.

Flynn Downes's pass was intercepted by Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored to give Liverpool the lead. Southampton responded shortly after with a penalty after Andy Robertson fouled Tyler Dibling, and although Adam Armstrong's initial attempt was saved, he scored on the rebound to equalize.

Southampton took the lead in the second half with a well-executed counter-attack, as Armstrong set up Mateus Fernandes for a 2-1 advantage. However, Liverpool quickly leveled the score, with Salah capitalizing on a lobbed pass from Ryan Gravenberch.

The game was sealed when Salah converted a penalty following a handball by Southampton's Yukinari Sugawara, handing Liverpool all three points. Southampton remains at the bottom of the table, still five points adrift of safety, and manager Jack Stephens expressed frustration over the poor goals conceded.
