Danny Jordaan, the President of the South African Football Association (Safa), was arrested on Wednesday following allegations that he misused the organization’s funds for personal gain. The arrest follows a police raid on Safa’s offices in March, with local media reporting that the charges relate to Jordaan's use of the association's resources between 2014 and 2018. This includes claims that Jordaan hired a private security firm and a public relations company for his own benefit without authorization from the Safa board.
Jordaan, known for his pivotal role in bringing the 2010 World Cup to South Africa, had attempted to block his arrest on Tuesday by seeking an interdict, but the Johannesburg High Court is only set to review his request on Thursday. His arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of Safa's finances during his tenure.
According to police spokesperson Katlego Mogale, Jordaan’s actions, along with those of his co-accused, Safa CFO Gronie Hluyo and businessman Trevor Neethling, involved using Safa’s funds for personal expenses, including security and public relations services. Jordaan, 73, and his co-accused are scheduled to appear in court later on Wednesday.
Neither Jordaan nor Safa have commented on the matter, with Reuters reporting that Jordaan denies any wrongdoing in an affidavit filed to the court.
