Sadiq Umar’s Valencia breaks 17-year curse against Madrid

Posted : 07 April 2025

Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq finally broke his personal jinx against Real Madrid, helping Valencia secure a dramatic 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabéu — their first victory there in 17 years.

Since arriving at Valencia on loan from Real Sociedad in January, Sadiq had faced Los Blancos three times previously without a win or a goal to his name, making this result all the more meaningful.

This weekend, however, marked a shift in fortunes for the Nigerian forward, who delivered a spirited performance in one of Valencia’s most memorable games of the season.

Sadiq, with four goals in his first nine league appearances for Valencia, led the frontline with purpose and nearly scored himself, only to be denied by a superb save from Madrid’s Fran González in the second half. Mouctar Diakhaby opened the scoring early for Valencia, heading in from a corner just 15 minutes in.

Real Madrid equalized in the second half, with Vinícius Júnior converting from close range after a smart flick-on by Jude Bellingham, reigniting the match.

Sadiq was taken off after an hour and replaced by Rafa Mir, a move that proved crucial. With Real Madrid chasing a winner in stoppage time, Mir sprinted down the right and delivered a perfect ball to Hugo Duro, who calmly finished to shock the Bernabéu faithful.

While Sadiq didn’t score, his contribution was vital, as he earned his first career win over Madrid and helped Valencia end a 17-year wait for success at one of football’s most iconic stadiums, dealing a major blow to Madrid’s La Liga title ambitions.
