Sadiq Umar of Real Sociedad speaks on Eagles' competition
Posted : 14 November 2023
Real Sociedad striker Sadiq Umar underscores the delight Nigerian players experience when summoned for Super Eagles duty, irrespective of playing time. Despite not scoring since September 2022, the former Almeria forward was a surprising inclusion in the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Sadiq, a Rio Olympics bronze medalist, returns to the national team after overcoming a career-threatening injury that sidelined him for eleven months.
Having promptly reported for international duty in Uyo, Sadiq, along with Kenneth Omeruo and Jamilu Collins, expresses motivation and readiness for the upcoming challenges. Following a demanding gym workout, he acknowledges the team's hard work and the need for rest, emphasizing the collective eagerness to represent the country.
In a loaded Super Eagles attack with competition for limited spots, including Taiwo Awoniyi, Victor Boniface, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Terem Moffi, Sadiq maintains a positive outlook on the intense rivalry. He stresses the team's happiness to represent the country, regardless of starting, gaining minutes, or being on the bench, calling for continued support.
Reflecting on his impactful full Super Eagles debut with a goal against Guinea-Bissau at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Sadiq remains optimistic about achieving favorable results in the upcoming matches. He hopes for the fans' support and expresses confidence that the team will deliver positive outcomes in the two games ahead.
