Sadiq, Osimhen, Bassey shined for Super Eagles on Sunday

Posted : 03 March 2025

Sunday saw intense football action across Europe’s major leagues, with several Super Eagles players delivering standout performances for their respective clubs. Many Nigerian internationals played pivotal roles, influencing results with their contributions on the pitch.

Among those who featured prominently were Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Frank Onyeka, Samuel Chukwueze, Victor Osimhen, Rafiu Durosinmi, and Bruno Onyemaechi. Several of them put in commendable performances, showcasing their skill and determination throughout the matches.

Victor Osimhen was one of Nigeria’s top performers of the day, netting twice in Galatasaray’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Kasimpasa at the Recep Tayyip Erdogan Stadium. His first goal came from the penalty spot, while his second was an expertly taken finish following an excellent solo run.

Galatasaray maintained the lead for most of the encounter, but a late strike from Haris Hajradinovic in the 85th minute ensured the game ended in a stalemate. Meanwhile, Calvin Bassey made a significant impact for Fulham, scoring in their FA Cup clash against Manchester United, which ended in a penalty shootout victory.

Bassey broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, rising high to meet Rodrigo Muniz’s cross and directing a powerful header into the net. Unfortunately, Fulham couldn't maintain their advantage as Bruno Fernandes equalized in the 71st minute to force extra time.

The game proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Fulham emerged victorious with a 4-3 win. Bassey delivered a commanding defensive display, registering 11 clearances, three interceptions, 115 touches, and two dribbles, further solidifying his reputation.

Another standout performer was Sadiq Umar, who netted a brace for Valencia in their dramatic 3-3 draw against Osasuna. It marked his first La Liga double since his promotion with Almeria three years ago. His first goal was a composed finish inside the box, while his second was an exquisite flick that left the goalkeeper with no chance. His contributions were crucial in securing a valuable point for his team.
