Rybakina Leads Kazakhstan to Semifinals as Zverev's Injury Derails Germany's United Cup Defense

Posted : 01 January 2025

Elena Rybakina's Kazakhstan caused a major upset at the United Cup on Wednesday, knocking out the defending champions, Germany, with world No. 2 Alexander Zverev sidelined by an arm injury just days before the Australian Open. This unexpected result in Perth propelled Kazakhstan into the semifinals of the 18-nation tournament.

Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, set the tone by earning the first point for Kazakhstan with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win over Laura Siegemund. Zverev, scheduled to play against Alexander Shevchenko, withdrew at the last minute due to a bicep strain. His replacement, Daniel Masur, put up a brave effort against Shevchenko but was defeated 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-2 despite a medical timeout in the second set for breathing difficulties.

In Sydney, world No. 2 Iga Swiatek led Poland into the quarterfinals, overcoming Karolina Muchova in a rematch of their 2023 French Open final. Swiatek won 6-3, 6-4, and later teamed up with Hubert Hurkacz to secure a vital 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 mixed doubles victory against Muchova and Tomas Machac. Swiatek acknowledged the challenge of playing against Muchova, praising her opponent's precision and intensity, which made for a tough but satisfying victory.

The United States, winners in 2023, are set to face China in the quarterfinals in Perth, while Britain will meet Australia in Sydney to determine who will join Italy in the last eight. Poland's next opponent will be the best runner-up from the three Sydney groupings, rounding off an exciting conclusion to the group stage.
