Rwang Pam Stadium: A fortress for Jos-based teams

The stadium built in 1964 has been home to many sporting activities in the North Central region of Nigeria.

Rwang Pam Stadium became iconic in 1972 when it hosted some of the matches that earned Mighty Jets, a club side in Jos, the honour of winning the first ever league in Nigeria.

Since 1972, the 15,000-capacity Rwang Pam Stadium has played host to many important matches but fewer international matches due to its "Class C" status, which does not meet international standards.

Besides this, clubs such as Mighty Jets JIB strikers and Plateau United FC all played their home matches inside the Rwang Pam Stadium during their campaigns in the league.

Plateau United FC in 1999 won the Federation Cup and did so well in the league.

Although the team did not eventually win the league, Rwang Pam Stadium played a significant role as Jos fans are always vociferous when cheering their darling clubs.

The city of Jos is a place for multiethnic dwellers, so Rwang Pam Stadium is known to have a high tolerance for visiting teams. Until now, violence in and around the stadium has been at its lowest ebb.

However, due to its small size, the government of Plateau State decided to build another stadium, which was opened in 2018, to complement it; hence, the stadium was relieved of many of the activities it used to have.

A resident of Jos and a sports enthusiast, Timothy Limen, said that the stadium ranked among the busiest stadiums in Nigeria in spite of its size.

"We do have a lot of activities in the stadium." Whenever I get home from work, I do go to the stadium to play some tennis with friends. I also relish the memories of hosting teams in the league coming here to play.

"The most interesting thing is that the fans here are not violent at all; we are hospitable, and we take the result as a fair deal," he said.
