Ruud van Nistelrooy Leads Manchester United to League Cup Victory as Caretaker Manager

Posted : 31 October 2024

Ruud van Nistelrooy kicked off his caretaker role as Manchester United's interim manager with a triumphant 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the League Cup, securing a spot in the quarterfinals. This win comes after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag earlier in the week due to a disappointing start to the season. Arsenal and Liverpool also advanced to the last eight, while Chelsea faced a setback, losing 2-0 to Newcastle.

As a club legend, Van Nistelrooy expressed confidence in his squad's potential, stating that United could become "unstoppable" when the players, staff, and supporters unite. The team showcased their attacking prowess by netting four goals in the first half. Casemiro initiated the scoring with a stunning strike into the top corner, followed by Alejandro Garnacho capitalizing on a Diogo Dalot assist. Although Bilal El Khannoussi pulled one back for Leicester, Bruno Fernandes quickly restored United’s two-goal advantage with a deflected free-kick, and Casemiro added another goal to his tally.

Conor Coady found the net for Leicester, but United secured only their second win in nine games when Fernandes seized on a defensive error to round the goalkeeper and score. Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo emerged as the star for Liverpool in their 3-2 victory against Brighton, contributing two powerful goals.

Gakpo, who had struggled in the Premier League and Champions League this season, showcased his form with impressive finishes in the League Cup. Luis Diaz also scored for Liverpool, while Brighton managed late goals from Simon Adingra and Tariq Lamptey.

In other matches, Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 victory over Preston, with Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz scoring alongside a standout strike from teenager Ethan Nwaneri. Newcastle rebounded from their Premier League loss to Chelsea with a 2-0 win at St. James' Park, featuring goals from Alexander Isak and an own goal from Axel Disasi.

Crystal Palace continued their momentum from a recent Premier League win, defeating Aston Villa 2-1 thanks to goals from Eberechi Eze and Daichi Kamada, further alleviating pressure on their management.
