Ruud van Nistelrooy, interim manager of Manchester United, believes the team can reach an "unstoppable" level but cautions that it will require patience and significant effort. Van Nistelrooy, a former United striker, will manage his first match on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup's last-16 clash against Leicester City at Old Trafford.
He was appointed as a temporary replacement following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday, with United currently positioned 14th in the Premier League standings. Meanwhile, Manchester United has expressed interest in Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim for the managerial role, though Amorim has yet to decide on his future.
Returning to United last summer as Ten Hag’s assistant, Van Nistelrooy reflects on his enduring belief in the club’s potential to return to its former heights. In his program notes before the Leicester game, he shared his commitment, saying, “When I returned in the summer, it was because I believe that Manchester United can climb back to the levels I knew here as a player.” He acknowledged the squad’s untapped potential, emphasizing that their capabilities have shown only intermittently this season and that consistency would require hard work and time.
Van Nistelrooy, who managed PSV Eindhoven from 2022 before rejoining United, envisions the club’s success as a united effort among players, staff, and supporters. He commented that when everyone is aligned, the team has the potential to be “unstoppable.” However, it remains uncertain if he would continue at the club should Amorim be appointed as manager, a possibility that may impact Van Nistelrooy's future role.
For now, Van Nistelrooy views the interim role as an honor and is focused on his responsibilities at United. “Even on an interim basis, it is a great honour to manage the club I love for however long I am asked to do so,” he said, underscoring his dedication to leading the team through the upcoming games.
