Ruben Amorim Remains Uncertain Amid Manchester United Interest

Posted : 30 October 2024

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim is still undecided about his future amid Manchester United's interest in appointing him as their next manager. Earlier on Tuesday, Sporting confirmed that United had approached them and were prepared to meet Amorim’s release clause of €10 million (£8.3 million).

Following Sporting’s 3-1 victory over Nacional in the Portuguese League Cup quarter-finals, Amorim told Sport TV, "Nothing is decided yet. I don't know if it's the farewell game or not." In a later press conference, he added that while there is interest from United, he has yet to make a decision and will announce his choice once he has clarity.

Amorim assured he would continue leading Sporting's training on Wednesday to prepare for their upcoming league game against Estrela da Amadora on Friday. When asked if he would be in Manchester for United's match against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, he responded ambiguously, saying, "I will be here," but added, "I don’t know," when pressed further. The uncertainty around his potential move has fueled speculation, with some Sporting fans expressing disappointment at the possibility of losing their coach mid-season.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised Amorim, calling him a "high-level coach" and noted the intense competition his team faced against Amorim’s Sporting side in previous encounters. Guardiola commented on Amorim's current success, as Sporting remains unbeaten this season in both the Portuguese League and Champions League, tying Manchester City in points.

While Guardiola acknowledged Amorim's abilities, he stressed that managerial success depends on multiple factors, from the team and support staff to the club’s infrastructure, making each role unique.

Sporting fans shared mixed feelings outside the stadium before the Nacional game. Many expressed regrets over the possible departure, believing United may not be the best fit for Amorim.

One fan, Ruben, voiced concern that Old Trafford might not be the right place for the Sporting boss, while another fan, Diogo, expressed gratitude for Amorim’s contributions but supported his decision to shape his career independently. Although some fans feel it’s a premature step, there is widespread admiration for the impact Amorim has had at Sporting.
