Ruben Amorim, the newly appointed head coach of Manchester United, acknowledged the challenges ahead as he prepares to take on the demanding role in England. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, who joins from Sporting, expressed his excitement about the new opportunity despite knowing the task will be tough. His appointment was confirmed earlier this month, and he is set to begin his tenure with United on a contract that runs until June 2027.
Amorim, who replaces Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman’s sacking, marked his final match with Sporting with a thrilling 4-2 comeback victory against Braga. Reflecting on his imminent move to Manchester, Amorim expressed readiness for the challenge ahead. "I'm not naive, I know it's going to be very different, very difficult," he said, adding that he felt at peace and was eager to start his new role at United.
Widely regarded as one of Europe's most promising young managers, Amorim’s first Premier League match will be on November 24 against newly promoted Ipswich Town. Under interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, United has recorded three wins and one draw in all competitions since Ten Hag's dismissal on October 28, leaving the team in 13th place in the league with 15 points from 11 matches, four points behind Chelsea in third.
Amorim admitted that replicating his success at Sporting, where he won the Primeira Liga twice, would be challenging, but he embraced the new pressure and expectations. "It’s been a fantastic adventure," he remarked. He also acknowledged the timing of his decision to leave Sporting mid-season, explaining that it was the right moment for him to take this next step in his career.
