Rory McIlroy explores ownership stake in Manchester United amidst sports investment surge

Posted : 22 October 2023
Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy has recently shown a keen interest in acquiring a share in Manchester United, taking his love for sports investment to a new level. Last week, news broke that McIlroy had joined forces with NFL stars Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes in a consortium that injected €200 million ($210.97 million) into the Alpine Formula One team. This bold move was announced at the Circuit of Americas during the Austin Grand Prix, where McIlroy shared his ambitions with Sky Sports.

In a world where sports team ownership was traditionally the domain of private equity giants and affluent individuals, McIlroy emphasized the changing landscape, with athletes becoming increasingly astute about their investments. He expressed his heartfelt desire to possess a fractional stake in the club he had passionately supported since his boyhood days.

While the majority ownership of Manchester United remains with the Glazer family, the recent acquisition of a 25% stake by Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group adds a new dimension to the club's structure. McIlroy welcomed this development, citing Ratcliffe's remarkable track record and the promise of enhanced sporting influence at Old Trafford.

McIlroy also reminisced about an opportunity he wished he could have grasped, stating, "I would have loved to have taken 0.00001% of Manchester United when Jim Ratcliffe took 25%. And if another opportunity comes my way, I will look at it."

He acknowledged other athletes like Tom Brady and golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, who have invested in football teams, but his loyalty to Manchester United remains unwavering. In a separate sporting development, Manchester United secured a 2-1 victory against Sheffield United on Saturday, holding their position at eighth in the league standings.
