Roma faced another setback in Serie A on Thursday night, suffering a 4-1 defeat away to Genoa. This loss leaves Roma languishing in 16th place with just five points accumulated this season, while Genoa moves up to the 11th spot.
In other matches, Fiorentina and Frosinone played to a 1-1 draw, with both teams vying for a shot at European qualification, and Monza held Bologna to a goalless stalemate.
Genoa, who had not beaten Roma in their previous 16 encounters and were winless in their last two home matches, took an early lead through Albert Gudmundsson's strike from inside the box. However, Bryan Cristante leveled the score for Roma with a headed goal after 22 minutes.
Genoa regained the lead just before halftime when Mateo Retegui volleyed home after an elegant passing sequence. Morten Thorsby added another goal for Genoa in the 74th minute, and Junior Messias sealed the comprehensive victory with a fourth goal.
Nicolas Gonzalez put Roma ahead after 19 minutes, marking his fourth goal in five games this season, following a new contract with the club extending until 2028. Matias Soule equalized for Frosinone on 70 minutes, heading in from a position similar to Gonzalez's effort.
The draw lifted Frosinone into eighth place, just behind seventh-placed Fiorentina, who have amassed 11 points.
Monza played to a goalless draw at home against Bologna in another early evening fixture. Bologna finished the game with 10 men after Alexis Saelemaekers received a red card in the 86th minute. Initially cautioned with a yellow card, Saelemaekers was shown a second yellow for sarcastically applauding the referee.
As a result, Bologna occupies the 12th position with seven points, while Monza is a point behind in 14th place.
