Roberto Firmino signs three-year contract with Al-Ahli

Posted : 05 July 2023
Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino has signed a three-year contract with Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli after departing from Liverpool. The 31-year-old became a free agent when his contract with Liverpool expired at the end of the previous season.

Firmino, who joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim in 2015, scored 111 goals in 362 appearances for the club.

Firmino's move to Al-Ahli is part of a trend of high-profile signings by Saudi clubs this summer. Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who recently left Chelsea, is also joining Al-Ahli.

Other notable transfers include N'Golo Kante and Kalidou Koulibaly leaving Chelsea for Saudi Arabia, and players like Karim Benzema, Ruben Neves, and Marcelo Brozovic making moves as well. Additionally, former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has taken on the role of manager at Al-Ettifaq.

This surge in signings reflects the ambition of the Saudi Pro League to establish itself as one of the top five leagues in the world. The league's aspirations have been reinforced by the acquisition of four leading clubs in the country by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which already owns Newcastle United.

Firmino's departure from Liverpool marks the end of a successful era with the club. He formed a formidable attacking trio with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, contributing to Liverpool's triumphs in the UEFA Champions League in 2019, the Premier League in 2020, and the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022.

Notably, Firmino scored the winning goal in extra time during Liverpool's victory over Flamengo in the FIFA Club World Cup in December 2019. His departure was announced in March and he bid farewell to the club with a warm reception from teammates and fans.
