Riyad Mahrez, who has won the Premier League five times - once with Leicester City and four times with Manchester City, has completed his transfer from Manchester City to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. The SPL has made another big-name signing, securing Mahrez in a deal worth up to £30m.
The 32-year-old winger had two years left on his contract with City, having been acquired for £60m in 2018. During his time at the Blues, Mahrez contributed significantly to the team's success, scoring 15 goals in 47 games during their Treble-winning campaign last season.
Reflecting on his time at Manchester City, Mahrez expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play for the club and the memories he made there. He emphasized that his main goal was to win trophies and enjoy football, which he accomplished and more.
City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain, praised Mahrez's impact on the team's achievements and acknowledged his exceptional skill and technique as a winger. The club bids farewell to Mahrez with fond memories and wishes him the best in his new chapter.
Saudi Arabia's SPL has been attracting top talent this summer, with the likes of Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, and Cristiano Ronaldo already joining. Additionally, Steven Gerrard has taken on the role of Al-Ettifaq manager, and Michael Emenalo has been appointed as the SPL's director of football.
The league's ambitions to rise among the top five in the world have been backed by the country's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has taken over four of the leading clubs, including Al-Ahli. The addition of Mahrez adds further excitement to the growing profile of the Saudi Pro League.
