After a tumultuous 2023/2024 season, Rivers United FC on Tuesday announced a one-week recess for the players and backroom staff.
Recall that Rivers United FC, the 2022 league champions and runners-up in the 2023 league, are the representatives of Nigeria at the CAF Confederation Cup but lost the quarter-final berth to USM Algiers.
The Pride of Rivers' dream of reaching the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals was shattered in April after a 2-0 defeat to USM Alger in the second leg of their quarter-final clash in Algiers.
Rivers United FC had gone into the second leg with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg played in Nigeria, but they were ultimately outclassed by the reigning champions.
USM Alger overturned the deficit with a dominant display, securing a 2-1 aggregate victory.
Returning home to the domestic league, Rivers United FC had to fire their longest-serving coach, Stanley Eguma, amidst unfavorable results from the matches.
However, with the long season now over, Rivers United announced that the team would now embark on a break.
The Pride of Rivers ended the season with a defeat to Akwa United at the Goodwill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The General Manager of the club, Okey Kpalukwu, expressed his gratitude to the players for their commitment to the team.
The manager announced a week break for the team and confirmed that the resumption date will be the 3rd of July, 2024.
