Rivers United FC earns a slim 1-0 win over Lobi Stars FC

Alex Oyowah's second NPFL goal in a Rivers United shirt saw off Lobi Stars as the Pride of Rivers bounced back to winning ways in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 5.
The talented attacking midfielder met Paul Acquah's cross, a well-taken free kick from the left-hand side, and placed his header to perfection, beyond the leaping Lucky Abdullahi and into the bottom corner.
Paul Acquah had already gone close as we started the match brightly, and Andy Okpe found the back of the net just after the half-hour mark, but it was ruled off with the provider Emmanuel Ampiah flagged for offside in the buildup to the goal.
Lobi Stars arrived with attacking intentions but had failed to go past the very impressive Abiodun Akande in goal for the Pride of Rivers.
Samuel Tiza snaked his way into the box and fired a dangerous low shot but was met with a great save by Akande.
Rivers United has its player, Abiodun Akande, to thank again when he stretched full length to make another superb save in the 63rd minute.
The visitors sensed an equalizer but we defended stoutly to earn a clean sheet, and we almost grabbed a second with missed opportunities late in the game.
As expected, Stanley Eguma made wholesale changes from the team's Sunday's loss to Kano Pillars. Abiodun Akande, Endurance Ebedebiri, Andy Okpe, and Chiamaka Madu were the only players to keep their places.
The Nigeria Premier Football League returns with Match Day 6 action on Wednesday and Thursday.
Rivers United's next game is against Heartland FC in Owerri on Wednesday, November 1.
