Rivers United emerges 2022/2023 NPFL highest earner

Third-placed Rivers United has emerged as the highest income-generating club in the 2022-23 season ahead of the winners of the Abridged league, Enyimba FC of Aba.

Rivers United, despite falling short of winning the NPFL title and losing it to their rivals Enyimba, topped the Nigerian club earning chat.

In spite of the Pride of Rivers' disappointment in the league, the Stanley Eguma-led team had a remarkable performance in continental competitions which propelled them to the top of the earnings chart, surpassing both Enyimba and other NPFL teams.

Rivers United FC placed third in the NPFL Super 6 play-offs, which resulted in their qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Rivers United however made fortunes in their continental competitions.

Their impressive run on the continent, as one of Nigeria’s representatives, significantly contributed to their earnings, setting them apart from their NPFL counterparts.

Rivers United’s campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup was the highlight of their season.

Although they were knocked out in the quarterfinals by Young Africans of Tanzania, their journey earned them a substantial sum of N254 million.

This achievement, combined with their NPFL participating fee of N10 million, brought their total earnings for the 2022-23 season to an impressive N264 million.

Enyimba, who clinched the NPFL title, secured the second-highest earnings in the league.

Along with the N100 million prize money for winning the Nigerian league, Enyimba’s participation in the Dozy Mmobousi Super Cup, where they finished as runners-up, added another N30 million to their earnings.

Their NPFL participating fee stood at N10 million, resulting in a total income of N140 million.

Shooting Stars SC of Ibadan, despite not claiming the NPFL title, showcased their prowess by emerging as champions in the Dozy Mmobousi Super Cup.

This victory earned them a substantial prize money of N100 million.

In addition to their NPFL participating fee of N10 million, Shooting Stars SC’s total income for the season amounted to N110 million.

Bendel Insurance secured the fourth position in terms of income among NPFL teams.

Their earnings were determined by their performance in the Tingo Federation Cup, where they received either N25 million or N10 million, depending on their position.

With a Dozy Mmobousi Cup participating fee of N10 million and an NPFL participating fee of N10 million, the Benin Arsenal’s total earnings amounted to N45 million or N30 million, depending on their position in the Tingo Federation Cup.

With an impressive total income of N264 million, Rivers United showcased their financial prowess, surpassing Enyimba and other NPFL teams.

The club’s success serves as a testament to the various revenue streams available in Nigerian football and highlights the importance of participating in continental competitions for financial gains.
